This article is interesting. While the writer makes a point; the very existence of the article (and his very knowledge of the popular artists he refers to) contradicts his claim that the artists’ inability to sing MATTERS in ANY way. Read. Comment.

Hey world, what’s good. I’ve come to Wedonotfollow for the purpose of ranting, so bear with me if you don’t like when people bitch. Now, maybe it’s the fact that I’ve been studying for exams since 9 this morning, or maybe it’s the fact that I’m running solely on coffee and a cold shower, but I am becoming slightly conflicted with this concept of huge rap stars collaborating with big indie names, i.e. Santogold and Jay-z, Kanye and Lykke Li, etc. I completely understand that most people aren’t like the readership of this blog and its contributors. The majority are, for lack of better words, culturally slow, failing to allow these artists to appear on their radar. That is, unless they reach the charts, which are full of songs completely irrelevant to this time, telling us we can buy whatever we like, and to just dance. I suppose that’s why the stars of the blogosphere link up with the high-profiled artists such as Kanye, Jay..people who reach are far broader crowd than the blog world can (for now). Maybe I would be more supportive of this idea of the products created as a result were..well I don’t know…better than just decent? I mean I rock with “Brooklyn We Go Hard” as much as the next jaded, teenage white kid, but is that really the best a dream-team like Kanye, Jay and Santi can do?
There is so much going wrong in this world..so much devastation, pain, depression..and there are good things too! Change, progression, love..What I’m trying to say is, in a society where there is so much happening, Can’t you churn out a song that doesn’t include you bragging about your cool pants, Ye? I recently had a conversation with a few friends about this very issue, and we came to a sort-of solid conclusion: we’re settling. “808s and Heartbreaks” was an opportunity for Kanye and his camp to speak to an entire generation which hangs on their every word. I mean, I won’t try to deny that the album was an expansion of Kanye’s musical repertoire, but lyrically..there just should have been more to say.
Now, let me make clear for those who are still reading (and I appreciate all two of you lol), I’m not condemning heavy-hitters like Jay-Z and Kanye for integrating these talented “newcomers” into a mainstream world..I’m simply asking a question: Where is the hunger? Where is the drive? There are flickers and sparks of it…a lot of them…but during times like these, we can’t live off flickers and sparks of creativity, emotional expansion and lyrical expressiveness.. we need a bonfire. I think it’s been made clear that we are in a particularly annoying economic recession..I just hope that we don’t end up in a musical one. I’m gonna start digging out my old Nirvania, Tribe and 2 Live CDs, just in case. I suggest you do the same.
